This spring, Owl Moon welcomed several baby vultures into our care. We’re thrilled to share that we successfully returned many of them to the wild. Whether through reintroduction to their parents' nests or fostering orphans into other vulture families, these young vultures have been given a second chance. As summer progresses, we’re now caring for a new group of juveniles that either lost their parent(s) or sustained injuries and need to be fostered into suitable family units.
Meet our current vulture residents:
- Black Vulture #1: This young vulture lost a parent and will soon be placed in a foster nest once she is fully fed and rehydrated.
- Black Vulture #2: After getting trapped in a chimney, this vulture sustained injuries to his wings and feet. He has been cleaned and bandaged, and we’re supporting his recovery. Once he’s back to full strength, he’ll be released to a foster nest.
- Black Vulture #3: This vulture fractured a toe, which we’ve secured in a protective shoe to ensure proper healing.
- Turkey Vulture: Our juvenile turkey vulture has no injuries but has lost her parents. We’re actively searching for a suitable foster nest and will place her with a vulture family as soon as possible.
Finding appropriate nests for fostering is challenging at this time of year. Many nests from previous years have not been successful, and it’s crucial that the young vultures are matched with nests of the right age. In the meantime, we’re diligently working to prevent these intelligent vultures from imprinting on their human caregivers. Ensuring they remain wild and maintain their natural behaviors is a top priority as they heal. Thank you for your continued support in our efforts to rehabilitate and reintroduce these remarkable birds back into the wild!
